A well-built deck extends your living space into the outdoors, and the right fence gives you the privacy and security to actually enjoy it. Together, they’re two of the highest-impact upgrades you can make to your backyard — and two of the projects where quality of construction makes the biggest difference in how long they last.
At The Setting Stone Company, we build custom decks and fences for homeowners across Clarington and the Durham Region. Whether you’re looking for a ground-level deck off your back door, a multi-level entertaining space, or a privacy fence that blocks the neighbours without blocking the light, we build everything to last through Ontario’s wet springs, humid summers, and hard winters.
We build decks and fences that are designed to be used and built to endure — not just look good in photos on installation day.
From material selection to the finishing details, we help you build an outdoor space that reflects how you actually want to live in your backyard.

Pressure-treated wood is a proven, cost-effective decking material that handles Ontario's climate well when properly built and maintained. We frame and deck with quality lumber, use proper footings below the frost line, and finish with your choice of decking profile and railing style.
A solid privacy fence gives you full control over your backyard — whether you're looking to block sightlines from neighbours, reduce road noise, or simply create a more enclosed, usable outdoor space. We build privacy fences in wood and vinyl, in a range of heights and styles.

Not every fence needs to be a privacy screen. Decorative and boundary fences define your property line, add structure to your landscape, and contribute to your home's curb appeal. We build semi-privacy, picket, and post-and-rail styles in wood and vinyl.
Decks and fences fail prematurely for the same reason most outdoor structures do — shortcuts at the foundation level. Deck footings that don’t go below the frost line will heave and shift, causing the entire structure to rack and loosen over time. Fence posts set without proper depth or concrete will lean within a few seasons. We’ve been building decks and fences across Clarington and Durham Region for over 15 years, and our process starts with getting the structural details right so everything above ground performs the way it should.

We dig and pour concrete footings below Ontario's frost line on every deck we build, ensuring the structure stays level and stable through years of freeze-thaw cycles without heaving or shifting.
We use pressure-treated lumber graded for ground contact where needed, quality composite products from proven manufacturers, and hardware that resists corrosion — because the details inside the structure matter as much as the surface.
Every fence post we install is set in concrete to the correct depth for Ontario's frost line, with proper drainage at the base to prevent premature rot. It's what separates a fence that stands straight for 15 years from one that starts leaning in three.
We keep your yard protected throughout the build, manage all material and waste disposal, and do a thorough cleanup when the job is done — so you can start using your new deck or fence right away.

In most Ontario municipalities, decks over a certain size or height require a building permit. Generally, decks higher than 24 inches above grade or attached to the house will require a permit. Fences typically don't require a permit but are subject to local bylaws governing maximum height. We'll advise you on the requirements for your specific project and municipality before any work begins.
Pressure-treated wood is more affordable upfront and is a proven performer in Ontario's climate, but it requires regular maintenance — staining or sealing every 2 to 3 years to prevent greying, cracking, and moisture damage. Composite decking costs more initially but requires very little maintenance, won't rot or splinter, and holds its appearance for much longer. The right choice depends on your budget and how much ongoing maintenance you want to take on.
A well-built pressure-treated wood deck that is properly maintained can last 20 to 30 years. Composite decks often come with manufacturer warranties of 25 years or more. In both cases, the longevity of the structure depends heavily on the quality of the framing and footings underneath — which is where our focus starts.
For full privacy, a solid board-on-board or tongue-and-groove wood fence, or a solid vinyl privacy fence, are the most effective options. Board-on-board fencing allows for slight airflow while maintaining full visual privacy. Vinyl is a lower-maintenance alternative that won't require painting or staining. We'll walk you through the options and help you choose based on your priorities and budget.
As a general rule, fence posts should be set to a depth of at least one third of their total length, and ideally below Ontario's frost line — approximately 4 feet in most of the Durham Region. Posts set too shallow are the primary reason fences lean and fail prematurely. We set every post correctly and backfill with concrete for maximum stability.
