Stone Masonry for Newcastle Bungalows and Older Homes

The Setting Stone Company takes on stone masonry in Newcastle, Ontario, from the Village Centre out to Graham: fireplace surrounds and hearths, feature walls, stone steps and stoops, and repointing older stone.

Many homes west of North Street are ranch bungalows from the 1960s and 1970s, and a stone surround can freshen a living room from that era. North Street also has some 19th and early 20th century houses, where careful repair matters more. In either kind of house, any appliance or chimney is a job for a gas fitter or WETT-certified technician, and we stick to the stone.

Facing a fireplace properly

How We Face a Fireplace From the 1960s or 1970s

First we find out what kind of fireplace it is. The Building Code’s fireplace section covers masonry fireplaces built on site: combustible material stays 150 mm from the opening, and a wood mantel projecting more than 38 mm sits at least 300 mm above it. Factory-built units go by CAN/ULC-S610 and their own instructions, and inserts must be installed to CSA B365. Only then do we choose the stone and how it is fixed. The Natural Stone Institute also cautions about sealers and adhesives near the heat.

Village Centre and heritage

Working on an Older Home in Newcastle's Village Centre?

The Village Centre plan aims to keep the area’s character as a heritage main street. Heritage dwellings there are marked on Map A of the plan, and owners are encouraged to seek designation. Clarington has moved to designate older buildings here too, such as 4-10 King Avenue East at the historic four corners. If your home is designated, Clarington’s heritage permit page says altering or replacing porches, chimneys or cladding may need a heritage permit, while routine upkeep that keeps the appearance does not.

Beyond that, new interior wall finishes do not normally need a building permit in Clarington, while installing a fireplace normally does. The list does not name stone facing on an existing fireplace, so confirm your job with the Building Division.

Old brick at the four corners

4-10 King Avenue East is a red brick Italianate building from around 1859, a reminder of how long masonry has stood in this village.

A local benchmark for brick and stone

The Newcastle Village Community Hall at 20 King St. W., a gift from Chester Massey, is a Neo-Georgian brick and stone building from 1923.

Cold-weather work goes indoors

The Building Code's January design temperature here is -22 C. A fireplace wall can go ahead indoors while the ground outside is frozen.

We work out of 140 Wharf St in Bowmanville, also in Clarington, so a visit to the village or the Port of Newcastle is easy to arrange.

Natural stone stoop with a railing

Tim and his team helped replace and repaint the exterior stairs of our house. They were knowledgeable about what needed to be done and helped come up with a plan to do the work. They were tidy as well which is always a bonus. We are very happy with the finished work!

Tim at Setting Stones rebuilt our slipped stone steps and installed a new retaining wall. Hands down the best contractor we’ve worked with. He was professional, listened closely to our vision, and accommodated every design change without complaint. He kept the site immaculate throughout the project, and the finished stonework speaks for itself. Highly recommend.

Bungalows, permits and masons

Before You Hire a Stone Mason in Newcastle

That comes down to taste, and no rule settles it. In our opinion, a long, low house can look good with stone laid in longer, flatter courses and a simple hearth, rather than something tall and dramatic. Homes west of North Street in Newcastle are mostly ranch bungalows of that era. We can talk through the options when we see your fireplace wall.

No, we handle the stone only. A gas fitter or WETT-certified technician handles any fireplace appliance or chimney, and Clarington's permit list normally requires a building permit to install a fireplace or hood stove. That goes for a bungalow west of North Street as much as a new home in Foster Northwest. Once that side is settled, we set the stone surround and hearth. Tell us early so the trades line up.

Normally not. Repairs to porches do not normally need a permit in Clarington, while raised porches and structural alterations normally do. In the Village Centre, where the plan marks heritage dwellings on Map A, check for a designation first: altering or replacing a porch on a designated home may need a heritage permit, but routine upkeep that keeps the appearance does not. We look at the porch and confirm what applies before work begins.

In a village with a heritage main street, look for someone who explains what goes under and behind the stone, gives an itemized quote and tells you which parts they won't touch. We use our own crew with no subcontracted labour, and the site visit is free. We are based in Bowmanville, also in Clarington.

Two stone jobs rarely cost the same. A fireplace wall in a ranch bungalow depends on the stone and the backing, and a porch repair on North Street depends on what has moved underneath. So we don't quote by phone. We visit for free, then send a clear, itemized quote with no obligation attached.
