Flagstone Patio Work in Newcastle, Ontario

If you live in Newcastle, Ontario, the village in Clarington, The Setting Stone Company can build your flagstone patio, walkway or steps, from the Village Centre out to Foster and the Port of Newcastle.

The house usually shapes the stone here. West of North Street, the housing is mostly 1960s and 1970s ranch bungalows, low and wide, and a broad patio with a wandering path suits that long shape. North Street also has some 19th and early 20th century houses, where irregular natural stone sits comfortably. We help you pick a stone size and layout to fit the home you have.

Low houses, careful levels

Getting the Levels Right Around a Low House

A ranch bungalow can have little height between the door sill and the ground, so the patio level gets worked out before any stone arrives. We excavate deep enough to fit the base and stone below the sill, lay geotextile fabric, compact a granular base, and grade the surface so water moves away from the foundation. Then we fit each stone by eye and finish the joints in polymeric sand or mortar.

Wilmot Creek, Graham Creek, Foster

Is Your Newcastle Lot in a Regulated Creek Area?

Newcastle in Clarington sits in the Wilmot and Graham Creek watersheds, and the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority (GRCA) worked with the municipality on updated floodplain mapping for them. GRCA lists site grading and placing or removing fill, dirt or stone among work that may need a permit in a regulated area. That can mean a flagstone patio in Newcastle.

In Foster, the Foster Creek and Wilmot Creek valleys form the east and west edges of the neighbourhood, so lots near either one deserve a look. Mapping and rules get updated, and Clarington’s site alteration permit can apply as well, so confirm with GRCA or the municipality first. We go through this with you when we quote.

Ranch bungalows west of North Street

Many date from the 1960s and 1970s, so an old concrete pad or a shifted walkway may be the starting point.

Heritage dwellings in the Village Centre

The plan marks them on Map A and encourages designation. Stone work on one deserves an early talk about what applies.

Growth at North Village and Foster Northwest

New lots there will need a patio plan built around fresh grading, with the Wilmot Creek valley close to Foster Northwest.

Clarington-based, with no subcontracted labour

Tim's own crew works from Bowmanville, also in Clarington. They protect the property, clean up and finish with a walkthrough.

What Do Newcastle Homeowners Ask About Flagstone?

We work in Newcastle, Ontario, the village in Clarington, as well as Bowmanville, Courtice, Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax and Pickering. Our company is based at 140 Wharf St in Bowmanville. We work across the Village Centre, Foster, Graham and the Port of Newcastle, and the site visit and quote are free.

Yes. A ranch bungalow is long and low, and a wide flagstone patio follows that shape well. Many west of North Street date from the 1960s and 1970s, so the first job may be removing an old pad or walkway. We then build a new base and work out the patio height from your door sill.

You may. GRCA may require a permit for projects near a watercourse, floodplain, valley slope, wetland or the Lake Ontario shoreline under Ontario Regulation 41/24, and site grading is on its list. GRCA's permit page speaks of the Ganaraska River Watershed and does not name Newcastle, so check its mapping tool for regulated areas or ask GRCA. We talk this through with you at the quote.

That depends where the lot sits. Clarington's Official Plan bars new buildings or structures of any type in the Regulatory Shoreline Area along Lake Ontario, which it describes as subject to dynamic beaches, flooding and erosion. Outside that area, a patio is a simpler job, though GRCA may still need a permit near the shoreline. We help you check the mapping before you commit to stone.

Both have their place around an older house on North Street or in the Village Centre. Mortared joints give a firm, formal look that suits steps, as long as the base beneath stays put. Sand-set flagstone with polymeric sand joints can be relevelled later if the ground moves. For a mortared front stoop, see our stone work page.
