Driveway Paving in Oshawa, Done Within the City's Rules

Interlock, asphalt or concrete: The Setting Stone Company does driveway paving in Oshawa, plus extensions, repairs and full replacements, for homes from Pinecrest to Taunton and Windfields.

Widening for extra parking? The City’s rule is plain. A driveway cannot be more than 50% of your front yard, because the other 50% must stay landscaped, and you need to contact Service Oshawa if yours will go past that. We measure this at the site visit, so you know what fits before anything gets priced.

What sits under the paving

A Driveway Base Built for Cars and Winter

A driveway carries more weight than a patio, so the base decides how long it stays flat. The Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association (CMHA) sets a 6 in. (150 mm) minimum compacted base for residential driveways on well-drained soil and says wet or weak soil in a colder climate needs more, while Unilock’s technical guide gives 10 to 14 in. as typical. We build to suit your soil and grade water away from your foundation. Changing land elevation within 0.6 m of the property line needs a Site Alteration Permit from Engineering Services, so we check levels.

Curb cuts and City trees

Do You Need a Permit to Widen a Driveway in Oshawa?

You do if the curb cut gets wider. A widening that stays on your lot still has to keep 50% of the front yard landscaped. A curb cut starts with a request to Service Oshawa, and every request needs a site visit first. If it is approved, you get a permit and pay a fee. Forestry Services also inspects any request within 2 m of a City tree or inside its dripline, and the proposed cut must be clearly staked or marked.

The City’s driveways and curbs page has the current rules, which can change, so confirm there before work starts. We help with the process at the quote.

New subdivision? Plan on waiting a winter

The City says paving is typically held off at least one winter so the ground can settle. Widening needs the developer's written consent.

Second driveways and corner lots

City criteria call for more than 16.0 m of frontage for a second driveway, and 11.0 m of clearance from the intersecting curb on corner lots.

A parking space has a set size

The City lists a house parking space at 5.75 m by 2.75 m, so we lay out the width around real numbers.

One crew from excavation to cleanup

Tim's own crew does the digging and paving, with no subcontracted labour, then cleans up and walks the finished driveway with you.

Driveway rules and costs

What Oshawa Homeowners Ask Before Paving a Driveway

A driveway in Oshawa cannot take up more than 50% of your front yard, because the other 50% must stay landscaped. The City lists a parking space at 5.75 m by 2.75 m, and a driveway must sit at least 1 m from above-ground utilities. We measure your lot at the free visit, so you know what fits.

No. Paving the City-owned boulevard is not allowed under Oshawa's Boulevard By-law, and parking must be on private property. When a driveway is widened, the City's Design Criteria Manual says the entrance across the boulevard and the lowered curb should generally match its width, with a flare of up to 30 degrees where utilities or street trees get in the way.

No. Oshawa does not inspect or complete curb cuts from December 1 to March 31, and reviews can occur from April 1 to November 30. If you want a wider driveway for spring, winter is still a good time to book a site visit and plan the job, so the request is ready when reviews reopen on April 1.

Driveway paving in Oshawa is priced on the material, the size, the base work and what must come out first. We don't give ballpark phone estimates, but we look at the site for free and send a clear, itemized quote. If a curb cut is involved, the City charges its own permit fee, from a $324 minimum for up to 3 m, and Service Oshawa can confirm the amount.

No, sealing interlock pavers is optional. Permacon, a paver maker, says a sealer is not necessary on its pavers and is a matter of personal preference. Unilock says if you do seal, plan to reseal every 3 to 5 years. We put our effort into the base and the joints, which are what keep an Oshawa driveway flat.
