We are The Setting Stone Company, and we do driveway paving in Ajax, in interlock, asphalt or concrete, along with widening, replacement and repairs for homes in Westney Heights, Applecroft, Nottingham and across town.
In Ajax, the private part of a driveway can be widened up to the zoning maximum with no application or payment to the Town. That maximum runs from 7.8 m in an R1-A zone down to 3.0 m in R2-B and R3. So the first thing we look up is your zone. The apron and curb are a separate matter, covered further down this page.

Property Standards By-law 46-2017 says hard surfaced driveways must be evenly graded and kept free of potholes and uneven sections. That starts underground. Unilock’s guidance says to carry the base past the paved edge, and its contractor driveway guide says to excavate 6 to 8 in. past the edge of driveway pavers. That matters when you widen. Our crew digs out for that extra width, lays geotextile fabric and compacts the granular base, then sets a grade that keeps water off your foundation.

The Town counts more than 30,000 residential driveways, and no two lots are the same. As driveway contractors across Durham Region, we work in all three surfaces.

The apron is the part of the driveway on Town-owned boulevard. Road Occupancy By-law 48-2025 lists asphalt, concrete, interlocking brick, crushed stone, gravel or a mix of those, and says a widened apron must stay 3 m from a fire hydrant and 1 m from utility equipment or a traffic sign. The Town’s Roads page is stricter about paving boulevards, so ask the Town before planning apron work.
Only the Town and its contractors may cut the curb. Curb cuts need an application with a concept drawing, review takes 10 business days, and approved cuts usually take another 10 to 15 business days. The Town’s driveway guide has the details, which can change, so confirm them first. We go over this at the site visit.
That is the residential rule. The Country Residential zone may be allowed two if all other requirements are met, separated by at least 9.0 m.
A wider apron cannot. The variance fee is discounted 50% when the widening provides barrier free access to a low-rise home.
A widened apron must stay 1 m from a municipal tree under 20 cm in diameter, or 2 m from a larger one. Ask the Town early.
Owners who alter a driveway outside the rules can be fined and made to restore it, so we check before anyone digs.
First we find your zone and measure, then we price. No ballpark on the phone, because every property in town is different.
Call or message us. We answer within 1 business day and arrange a free, no-obligation consultation at your home.
We look up the zone, measure the driveway, apron and walkways, and note hydrants, trees and utility equipment.
You get a clear, itemized quote, along with advice on any curb cut application and the concept drawing it needs.
Our own crew protects the property, builds the base and paves, then cleans up and walks through the finished driveway with you.

Your zone under Zoning By-law 95-2003 decides. The Town lists 7.8 m for R1-A, 6.1 m for R1-B, 5.6 m for R1-C and R1-D, 5.2 m for R1-E, R1-F and R2-A, and 3.0 m for R2-B and R3. Country Residential has no width maximum, but driveways and parking cannot take more than 30% of the front yard.
Not for the private part, up to the zoning maximum. A curb cut is different: it needs an application with a concept drawing, and By-law 48-2025 lists cutting a curb among the things that need a permit first. For anything on the boulevard, ask Operations and Environmental Services at curbcut@ajax.ca or 905-683-2951.
Yes. At-grade walkways beside a driveway need no application or payment if they meet the rules. They can be 1.8 m wide on the side nearest the main entrance and 0.6 m on the opposite side. On the Town boulevard they must be interlocking pavers, concrete or asphalt, with no raised curbs. Check that part with the Town first. We also build interlock walkways.
A driveway's cost depends on its size, the material, the base work and what has to come out. If you need a curb cut, By-law 67-2025 sets the Town's fee for up to 4 metres, plus a charge for each metre past that. For our part, we visit for free and send an itemized quote.
Durham Region requires a permit before an entranceway on a Regional road is modified. It charges no permit fee, but it typically installs the curb cut or culvert itself at the owner's cost, and work in the right-of-way needs a separate Road Occupancy Permit. The Region's entranceway page explains this, and its map shows which roads are Regional.
