Snow Removal in Oshawa for Driveways, Walks and Front Steps

The Setting Stone Company offers snow removal in Oshawa for homeowners who want driveways, walkways and front steps cleared by people who build those surfaces for a living.

The City’s Winter Access By-law gives owners until midnight of the first day after the snowfall ends to clear the sidewalk along their lot, and it counts windrows, the ridge a plow leaves behind. From December 1 to April 1, overnight street parking is banned in any weather, so cars spend winter nights on the driveway. We plan snow clearing around both, and we work across Oshawa, including Downtown Oshawa, Samac and Columbus.

Clearing what we build

How Should Snow Come Off an Interlock Driveway?

Interlock can be shovelled, blown or plowed like other pavement, but paver edges can chip. A maintenance note from the Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association (CMHA) says to work diagonally to the joints and to repair pavers lifted more than 1/8 in. (3 mm) before winter. Oshawa normally gets 7.8 days a year with 5 cm of snow or more, by Environment Canada’s 1991 to 2020 numbers. We install pavers for a living and clear them with those edges in mind.

Snow stays on your own lot, clear of the sidewalk and the road

De-icer matched to the surface, because pavers, concrete and stone differ

Flagstone treated as its own material, because salt can flake limestone

The City's rules, in plain words

What Does Oshawa Require After a Snowfall?

Oshawa’s Winter Access By-law covers the sidewalk in front of, alongside or behind your lot. Clear it by midnight of the first day after the snow ends, windrows included. If you don’t, the City can do the work without notice at your expense, with 15% interest, and the cost can go on your tax roll. Snow can’t be moved onto a sidewalk or road, or onto a boulevard that isn’t next to your lot. Where a building sits close to a sidewalk or road, s. 4.1 also makes its owner remove roof snow or ice likely to fall on it. By-laws can change, so confirm with the City. We go over this at the quote.

A City program for seniors and residents with disabilities

The Snow Clearing Assistance Program clears City sidewalks and windrows for eligible residents. Driveways and private walks stay with the owner.

Parking permits stop counting when plows are out

Occasional Use Parking Permits are not valid during salting or snow clearing, when street parking is banned at any hour.

January is the big month

Environment Canada's 1991 to 2020 normals give the city 101.7 cm of snow a year, with 33.5 cm of that falling in January.

Commercial owners must clear ramps too

The City says commercial owners must completely clear sidewalks and ramps next to their property by midnight of the day after a snow event ends.

From first call to first snow

How a Snow Clearing Arrangement Gets Set Up

We do not give ballpark numbers by phone, because every yard is different. We look at the property first and go from there.

Send Us Your Address

Give us the address and a rough idea of what needs clearing. The contact form works, or call (905) 922-6684.

01

We Walk the Surfaces

We look at interlock, flagstone, concrete and asphalt, note lifted pavers and borders, and ask how many cars stay overnight from December to April.

02

We Agree on What Suits You

If you are weighing seasonal against per-visit, talk to us about what suits your property. You get a straight answer and a clear, itemized quote.

03

Snow Goes Where It Should

The City says to pile driveway and sidewalk snow on your own property. We do, and we keep it off pavers, since CMHA says not to store salty snow on them.

Oshawa snow rules, answered

Snow Clearing in Oshawa: Rules, Salt and Costs

By midnight of the first day after the snowfall ends, under s. 3.1 of the City's Winter Access By-law. The duty is on the owner and includes windrows on the sidewalk. If the sidewalk is still slippery after that, s. 3.2 requires sand, salt or similar material immediately and as often as necessary.

The owner does. The City's snow clearing page says windrow clearing is the home or property owner's responsibility. The City's assistance program can clear it for eligible residents, but only the ridge itself. The rest of the driveway stays yours, so ask us about the windrow when we talk through your property.

Yes. The Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association (CMHA) rates rock salt the least damaging de-icer for concrete materials, and says to clear the excess once the ice loosens. Rock salt fades in deep cold: Conservation Ontario gives -7 C and CMHA about -9 C, and Oshawa's normal January low is -8.9 C. CMHA allows careful use of calcium chloride, but Permacon prohibits it, so check your paver maker's rule. Our guide to interlock in winter has more.

The City's Snow Clearing Assistance Program helps residents 65 or older or living with a disability, as long as everyone else at the home is also 65 or older or living with a disability. The program clears and salts City sidewalks and clears the windrow. The 2026 application period runs October 1 to December 18, and later applications are reviewed case by case.

We don't put a number on it by phone, because no two lots are the same. Driveway length, walks and steps, the surface underneath and how many cars stay put during the December to April parking ban all change the job. Talk to us about what suits your property, and we will give you a clear answer.
