Snow removal in Ajax, Ontario, from The Setting Stone Company covers the driveway, the walkway to your door and the front steps, for homeowners across town.
The Town counts more than 30,000 residential driveways, and the windrow at the end of each one is the owner’s job. Its own winter page says snow storage is very limited in newer communities, where narrow lots reduce the space. So the first question on a narrow lot is where the snow can legally go. Building driveways is our trade, so we look at that first, and we clear interlock and flagstone the way someone who has laid them would.

Section 5.4 of By-law 46-2025 rules out the road, the sidewalk and your neighbour’s property without authorization, so the pile has to fit on your side of the line. We work that out before the first storm. The pile should sit downhill of your walk, so melt does not run back across it, and off any interlock. A note from the Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association (CMHA) says not to store salty snow on pavers.

Ajax’s Public Nuisance and Safety By-law 46-2025 gives owners or occupiers 24 hours to clear snow and ice from any sidewalk and fire hydrant on or bordering the property, windrows included. If you don’t, s. 5.2 lets the Town clear it without notice and recover the cost through legal action or on your tax roll. The 2026 fee, based on how much of your lot borders the sidewalk, is $175.70 for up to 23 metres, plus $8.50 for each extra metre, before HST. A penalty is possible as well. Section 5.4 bars shovelling, plowing or blowing snow onto or across a road, sidewalk, pedestrian walkway or another property without authorization, and that covers anyone you hire. By-laws change, so confirm with the Town.
The Town says driveways near intersections and where the road bends usually have slightly more snow left in front of them.
The Town says permits are automatically revoked during a winter weather event, and parking from 1:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. needs a permit.
Town crews clear primary sidewalks first, on Regional and main Town roads, which can take up to 16 hours. Secondary roads like Ravenscroft and Williamson come before residential streets.
Traffic By-law 45-2020 bars parking on an apron with any part of the vehicle over the travelled road, snow or no snow.
Room to store snow decides most of this, and nobody can judge that over the phone. So we come and look, free and with no obligation.
A rough idea of your frontage and any corner or bend helps. The contact form is fine, or phone (905) 922-6684. We measure properly on the visit.
We look at lot width, hydrants, the sidewalk and where meltwater will run, then work out where snow can legally go.
You get a clear, itemized quote for your lot. If the Town's program fits you better, we will say so, and you decide from there.

You do, according to the Town's winter roads page, unless you are in the Town's program for seniors and qualified residents. A 2019 estimate put Town-wide windrow clearing at over $1.8 million a year. Snow from your windrow cannot go back on the road or sidewalk, or onto a neighbour's lot, without authorization.
The Town's 2026-27 Snow Removal Program is a real option. One level covers the driveway, windrow, sidewalk and a pathway to one door, and a lower level only the windrow and sidewalk. Service starts above 5 cm, 24 hours after the snow stops and plows finish, on no set schedule. Applicants must be over 65 with no able-bodied person under 65 there, or have a doctor's note for a physical disability.
Plain rock salt, in small amounts. CMHA rates sodium chloride least damaging to concrete materials and does not recommend magnesium chloride or CMA. It allows careful use of calcium chloride, but Permacon prohibits it, so check your paver maker's rule. In Ajax there is a second reason to go easy: TRCA's chloride readings in Carruthers Creek. Our guide to salt on interlock has more.
Frontage, driveway length, a corner or bend, the walk, the steps and where the snow can legally go all change the job, so we don't give a number over the phone. The Town lists its own program fees on its application form. For a private arrangement, ask us to come and look, and we will give you a clear answer.
It can. CMHA says plowing can chip paver edges where pavers sit unevenly or the blade is not diagonal to the joints. It says blowers and plows can ride on shoes that hold the blade just above the surface, but worn shoes can leave metal filings that rust. Permacon recommends plastic shovels without metal blades. If you hire snow plowing in Ajax, ask about both before the first storm, and tell the operator the driveway is interlock.
Spring work starts with a plan: a wider driveway or new interlock. See our winter services across Durham Region too.
