Driveway Paving in Newcastle, Ontario, Done by the Rules

Driveway paving in Newcastle, Ontario, is part of what The Setting Stone Company does across Clarington: interlock, asphalt or concrete, plus widening, replacement and repairs, for homes in Graham, Bond Head and North Village.

Driveways here range widely. West of North Street, the ranch bungalows of the 1960s and 1970s may be on their second or third surface by now, while North Village is largely rural, with open farm fields, and planned for growth. On a road with a ditch rather than a curb, the job can also involve an entrance culvert, which has its own timing rules.

Slope and what lies beneath

Getting Water Away From a Low Bungalow

A ranch bungalow can sit low, so a driveway that drains toward the house causes trouble quickly. CMHA, the paver association, calls for a minimum slope of 1.5% in its construction note and typically 2% in its de-icing note, and Unilock says to slope away from the house. We excavate, lay geotextile fabric and compact a granular base, then set the levels so the surface falls to the street or the lawn.

Culverts, trailers and the Region

Does Your Newcastle Driveway Need a Culvert Permit?

It may: Clarington’s private entrance permit covers curb cuts, widening a driveway, and installing or replacing a culvert, which matters on lots near the village’s rural edge. Entrance culverts may not be available for installation from October 1 to April 30 because of ground frost, snow cover and spring weight restrictions. Driveways off a Regional road go through the Region of Durham, so ask which applies if you are on Durham Highway 2, which borders the Foster Northwest area. Near Wilmot or Graham Creek, ask the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority (GRCA) whether grading or fill needs its permit.

The permit page has the full list, and Clarington can confirm what applies today. We go over it when we come out from Bowmanville to quote.

Trailers over the 5.5 m limit

Larger trailers or RVs are limited to 120 hours per calendar month on a driveway, set back 0.5 m from the street line.

Boat owners near Bond Head

With a boat launch at Bond Head Park, a trailer may need driveway room. We plan around the by-law.

4.5 to 6 metres for detached and semi-detached

That is the maximum on single-detached and semi-detached homes here, depending on lot size and garage width, unless zoning says less.

Soft landscaping stays at 40 per cent

An entrance widening or curb cut can't take the boulevard's soft landscaping below that number, so we measure before we plan.

Local driveway questions

What Newcastle Homeowners Ask About Driveway Paving

Yes. We pave driveways across Newcastle, Ontario, in Clarington, from the Port of Newcastle to North Village, in interlock, asphalt and concrete, along with widening and repairs. We are based at 140 Wharf St in Bowmanville, and our own crew does the work, with no subcontracted labour. The on-site consultation and the itemized quote are both free.

Single-detached and semi-detached homes in Graham, Foster or west of North Street fall under Clarington's maximum of 4.5 to 6 metres, set by lot size and garage width. Townhomes get 3 to 4 metres. Zoning By-law 84-63 can reduce that. The minimum driveway length is 5.75 metres from the nearest face of the house to the property line.

Yes, within limits. Zoning By-law 84-63 allows a trailer or recreational vehicle up to 5.5 m long and 2.4 m high on a driveway in an urban residential zone. Anything larger is limited to 120 hours per calendar month and must be set back 0.5 m from the street line. With a boat launch at Bond Head Park on Graham Creek, those limits are worth knowing before you widen.

Plan over the winter and apply early. Clarington's curb cuts may not be inspected or completed from October 1 to March 31, and culverts may not be available from October 1 to April 30, so aim for May to September, when neither limit applies. The culvert limit matters most on the rural edge, around North Village. Winter consultations are welcome, and our own schedule fills as the weather warms up.

That depends on your lot, so we would rather price it than guess. A long driveway on the rural edge of Newcastle and a short one on a bungalow lot are very different jobs, because base work and removal often drive the number. After a free visit, you can compare interlock, asphalt and concrete on one itemized quote.
