The Setting Stone Company is a flagstone patio contractor based in Bowmanville, at 140 Wharf St, building natural stone patios, walkways and steps for homes from Port Darlington up to Brookhill.
This has long been a brick town. Buildings in the historic King Street core are primarily brick, and the local heritage committee calls the Gothic Revival building at 3438 Green Road the only one of its type in fieldstone, because brick was the material of choice. So on an older house here, the first flagstone question is how the stone’s colour sits against the brick already there.

The Bowmanville Creek and Soper Creek valleys frame the downtown, and the Lake Iroquois Beach landform runs east-west across Clarington, where the Official Plan encourages only minimal change to natural contours. So we fit flagstone to the lay of the land where we can, rather than flattening a yard. Every flagstone patio in Bowmanville still gets proper excavation, geotextile fabric and a compacted granular base, graded to move water away from your foundation, with polymeric sand or mortar in the joints.

Four kinds of flagstone work, for older houses and brand new ones alike. Pool surrounds and matching stone stoops and front steps can be part of the same job.

Each part of town brings its own check. In Port Darlington, the Official Plan bars new buildings or structures of any type in the Regulatory Shoreline Area along the waterfront, and the area plan maps flood and fill lines. In Brookhill, a third of the land is natural features and the Brookhill Tributary runs through much of it. Council’s April 2026 heritage designations include Victory Housing homes along Veterans Avenue, Second Street and Lambs Lane, so ask what a designation covers before changing a front walk.
Clarington’s Building Division at 40 Temperance Street can confirm the current rules, and Tim can walk you through them at the quote.
Our own crew works out of Bowmanville, and Tim is on site during the work, so a question gets a straight answer.
About 100 hectares there is built or approved. We check the builder's grading on a new lot before any stone goes down.
The 1996 Port Darlington plan describes that mix of homes by the lake, where a patio plan has to start with the shoreline maps.
The Official Plan's low-density neighbourhoods usually mean houses with yards, which is where a flagstone path or patio has room to work.
We don’t quote flagstone over the phone. We come to the property, look at the ground and put everything in writing before anyone digs.
Phone (905) 922-6684 or use the contact form. You hear back within 1 business day, and we arrange a time to visit.
Tim comes by for free, with no obligation. He checks slope, drainage, access and any existing stone or slab.
Every line is itemized, so you can see what goes into the job. We also tell you if a permit or approval applies.
The crew protects your property, digs, builds and sets the flagstone, then cleans up and goes over the result with you.

We couldn't be happier with the work done by The Setting Stone Company. Tim and his team are professional, punctual and incredibly skilled. They transformed our front yard with a custom porch and walkway. It's now a beautiful and functional space. They also installed a concrete pad, custom shed and matching patio stone surround to complete the look.

That depends on where your lot sits. The Port Darlington plan maps a Regulatory Shoreline Area with flood and fill lines and a wetland, and shoreline or creek projects must get approvals under laws including the Conservation Authorities Act. We look at this with you at the quote, before anything gets ordered or dug.
Start with the brick. Flagstone comes in a range of natural tones, and the safest choice picks up one colour already in the wall. Older brick here can run to two colours: the Victoria Building on King Street West has dichromatic brickwork with buff brick quoins. We talk through options on site, standing in front of your house.
Build time depends on the patio's size, how much digging the slope needs and how easily the crew can reach the backyard, so we talk timing once we have seen the yard. Our schedule fills in spring and summer, and we are right here on Wharf Street, so a winter consultation is an easy way to plan a flagstone patio in Bowmanville.
You may. Placing fill, changing grades or working close to a stream may need a permit from Central Lake Ontario Conservation under Ontario Regulation 41/24, and the Bowmanville East plan names slope and erosion hazards in the valley systems. Clarington's site alteration permit can apply as well. CLOCA, which covers the Bowmanville and Soper Creek watershed, says the first step is to ask its staff, and its page points to a regulated area map.
Go by the look you want, because both work on a newer lot when the base is right. Natural flagstone gives a Brookhill yard irregular stone and soft edges. Interlock pavers give you crisp lines and a repeating pattern. We can price both on the same itemized quote, and then you decide.
We work across Clarington and Durham Region. These pages cover our other local services and the same flagstone work in other towns.
The visit is free, the quote is itemized and there is no obligation. Call Tim at (905) 922-6684 or send a note.
