The Setting Stone Company’s snow removal in Bowmanville covers driveways, walkways and front steps for local homeowners, from our base at 140 Wharf St.
Residential snow removal here has two local wrinkles. Clarington wants bordering sidewalks cleared to their full width within 24 hours after a snowfall ends. And Bowmanville’s historic King Street core is primarily brick, so de-icer needs a careful hand near old masonry. We build driveways, walkways and stone steps for a living across Orchard Park, Aspen Springs, Soper Hills and the rest of town, so we know which products are hard on what.

The Natural Stone Institute says salt enters a stone’s pores in solution, recrystallizes as the water evaporates, and the pressure can flake the surface. It names limestone and travertine as most often affected, and does not recommend limestone exterior paving where de-icers may be used. A New York heritage group warns de-icers can also damage masonry facades. So around older Bowmanville steps and foundations we shovel first, use de-icer only where people walk and keep it back from the wall. Concrete pavers differ: those made to the CSA A231.2 standard are freeze-thaw tested in a saline solution.

All of it. Clarington’s snow removal page says its by-law, 93-144, gives owners 24 hours after a snowfall ends to clear bordering sidewalks to their full width, and the job comes back between snowfalls or when snow drifts. Leave it and you can pay the municipality’s cost of doing the work, plus a $50 administrative fee. Rules can change, so confirm with Clarington.
Most of Bowmanville’s planned homes are low density, 14,168 of 23,335 units in the Official Plan, so this job falls on a lot of individual owners. Environment Canada’s 1981 to 2010 normals for Bowmanville Mostert show 93.1 cm of snow a year, and snow depth there reached 78 cm on January 16, 1999.
Clarington has plowed and salted primary route sidewalks since winter 2023-24, yet owners stay responsible for them, and windrows are not included.
Reports of uncleared sidewalks go through Service Clarington or 905-623-3379, and are accepted after at least 24 hours of clear weather.
During a snow event, you cannot park on the street at any hour. Cars in the way may be ticketed and towed, and temporary passes do not count.
You cannot park on the road from 3 to 5 a.m. or for longer than three hours. Clarington says that by-law applies year round.

There is no single answer for old masonry, which matters around the brick of Bowmanville's King Street core. The New York Landmarks Conservancy, a heritage group, names no single best product. It says to shovel first, mix de-icer with sand, apply sparingly and keep it off the base of the building, because de-icers can damage masonry facades. If your "brick" means interlock pavers, see our salt guide.
You do, unless you are in Clarington's seniors and disabilities program, which clears windrows only above 15 cm of snow. A windrow is the pile a plow leaves at the bottom of the driveway, and Clarington's sidewalk clearing on arterial roads does not remove it. Environment Canada's 1981 to 2010 normals for Bowmanville Mostert show 31.0 cm of snow in January, so expect more than one pile. Ask us about it when we look at your driveway.
No. Clarington tells residents not to push, plow or blow snow onto the road, under By-law 2014-059, its by-law on vehicle operation. Pile it on your own lot and leave room for more. By Environment Canada's 1981 to 2010 normals a Bowmanville winter brings about 93 cm, so the first pile is rarely the last.
Clarington runs a snow clearing program for seniors and persons with disabilities, for residents 65 or older, or with a certified disability, when no able-bodied person under 65 lives there. Applications for 2026-27 ran September 21 to October 31, 2026, and the fee is $107.69 with HST. The program handles sidewalks and the windrow, and private walkways and the rest of the driveway stay with you.
We don't give ballpark numbers by phone, because the job depends on what you have: how long the driveway is, what the steps are made of, how much sidewalk borders the lot. A stone stoop near King Street needs different care from a new driveway in Brookhill. Talk to us about what suits your property, and we will come over from Wharf Street to see it.
Our home base also means new driveways, stone steps and repointing and winter services across Durham Region.
